2016… the year of Virtual Reality holidays?
by Grove Admin
How can you visit a holiday destination without even packing your bags? Grove Travel can take you there, well ‘virtually’! Explore your dream destinations across the globe just as you would in ‘real life’ through a Virtual Reality (VR) headset.
Grove Travel first experienced virtual reality travel at the World Travel Market 2014 through South Africa’s Oculus Rift VR headset; by simply putting on the VR headset we were immediately transported to South Africa for 5 minutes to cave dive with sharks, chill out at a bar in Johannesburg, feed elephants and even climb Table Mountain! The virtual reality experience is completely immersive allowing you view 360 degrees of your destination by moving your head in any direction.
A year on, things have moved forward even more in VR technology for holidays and travel. This year at the World Travel Market 2015, Shangri La Hotels and Resorts gave us a tour of one of their 5* hotels and resorts via Samsung Gear VR headset with a smartphone attached. Their videos can simply be downloaded from their website onto a compatible VR headset to enjoy at your leisure. Discover the Grand Ballroom in Kowloon Shangri-La hotel, or absorb the many sights and sounds while standing at the edge of Genghis Khan Square in Ulaanbaatar.
VR headsets have even moved into aircraft; Air New Zealand have given us our very own Google Cardboard Air New Zealand headset to explore their new 777-300ER aircraft, simply move your head different angles to explore different cabin classes and learn about the great new features of their brand new fleet, such as their plush new Skycouch seats. Compatible with many smartphones, just download the app from Air New Zealand’s website and place it in a Google Cardboard VR headset which only costs around £10.
Whichever headset you use, Virtual Reality is a great way to view your holiday before you even get there helping you choose the best value option!
