Sicily is the new black……
by Grove Travel
Since the beginning of January we have made quite a few bookings to Sicily.
It’s a land of contrasts with the souks of Palermo and Tuna fisheries of Trapani, the Summers are long and generally run from April to October.
There is a great range of accommodation from traditional B&B’s to luxury 5 star.
You can choose to relax or explore the island or maybe both.
Here is a review from one of our clients who has returned from The Excelsior Palace in the resort of Taormina.
We had a good time, thank you, helped considerably by the fact that the weather was unseasonably cool for the time of year, only 28/29 instead of the usual 40+ degrees!
The Hotel was fine, food not bad at all, bit of a walk down to the pool and you need to be reasonably fit, because it’s uphill all the way back, including quite a lot of steps.
We all thought Taormina was a most delightful town and the main street full of character. We hired a taxi for the day (250 euros) to Syracusa and visited the amphitheatre there, going on to the Isle of Ortigia, where we had a most delicious lunch. The driver was most informative and in all truth, if we’d taken a conducted bus tour, it would overall have cost more and we had the luxury of leaving at 9.30, rather that 7.30! We took the cable car one time (nothing special, since views are obscured) and took a bus down to Giardini Naxos (looked pretty from above, but not worth the journey). We also visited the amphitheatre in Taormina, which was very impressive.
We did not do the Etna Sunset tour (a rather steep 500 euros for all of us from 3pm, returning at 11), but were lucky that she was erupting the whole time we were there, so we were treated to a lovely red glow every night.
It was never going to be a typical beach/pool holiday and I think for that reason, My Wife liked it the most and would love to go back again. I would also be happy to return, maybe trying a different bit of the island.
