ST NICHOLAS BAY – It is a hotel located 2km away from Aghios Nikolaos – a lively, upbeat town for those looking to have a wander around. However this hotel is a small, intimate white-washed hotel with only 107 rooms located in 6 acres of gardens. There are many nooks and crannies for privacy & easy to be shielded away from the main activity. There are separate areas for the children allowing this to be a suitable hotel for couples as well as families. Due to the small number of rooms but on such a large acreage of land, it provides the type of holiday which is laid-back and relaxed. There are a number of facilities afforded for the children but I loved the cave-like cinema operated for them in the late afternoon with different films showing at the end of the day at no extra charge. The Spa offers a number of treatments…and of course, it would have been rude not to have enjoyed the Massage within one of the caves overlooking the sea and gardens. The further away you go from the hotel are Suites which offer a good number of guests to stay without paying extortionate prices. Dining is a wonderful experience since they understand the importance of client’s needs. They have trained their chef to make incredible fresh sushi & sashimi. This is a hotel of excellent service and by the number of repeat clients, it is a hotel that offers individual style at an affordable cost. It is also a member of “The Small Luxury Hotels of the World”
DAIOS COVE LUXURY RESORT & VILLAS – Although classed as being in Aghios Nikolaos, this is in a secluded hillside area. It is isolated but private…I loved it here. It is uber-chic, modern & deluxe. On entering, the hospitality is incredible with a cooling towel and an introduction to wide open space. With furnishings of dark wood, crisp whiteness & contemporary art, this hotels epitomes the sense of Ibiza with lounge beds and a funky vibe. Although, the atmosphere is much more relaxed and under-stated. The rooms are large in size with each Deluxe Room looking out to sea. As you go higher in category, you can be afforded privacy with your own private pool. Above the Suites are the private 2 or 3-Bed Villas ideal for families. This is a hotel that suits groups of friends, couples and families. There is an amazing kids club from 4-month old babies to 4 years where there is a charge. However from 4-years upwards, there is an abundant amount of entertainment with no charge. Activities for adults include water-skiing, pedaloes, canoeing and scuba-diving plus tennis, fitness training, yoga & pilates. And amongst its sophistication and finesse is that their top clients are from the UK with Prestige Holidays leading the way
BLUE PALACE – a Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels. Although there are elements of a typical Starwood, what is fantastic about this hotel was the impressive location with mountainous views on one side and beautiful sparkling waters on the other with Spinalonga Island nestling on the sea. It is a large hotel but so widely spaced out that you would not know when the hotel was full (as it was 95% whilst I was there). The light wood furnishings with typical blue & white Cretan décor gives this hotel a fresh look. As you go up the rooms categories, added space is afforded along with extra privacy to the point where there are private villas with private pools and 2-3 bedrooms. These are away from the main hotel and some are duplex – fantastic for those with teenage children. There is a good variety of restaurants including Steakhouse, Asian (variation of Polynesian/ Chinese/Japanese/Thai) & Greek taverna with also 24-hour room service. There is an incredibly-sized seawater pool with an additional adult’s heated-pool, with kid’s pool attached, PLUS the pebbled beach with sunbeds all set-up. With a kids club and spa, you have everything that you need. This is ideal for customers wanting to venture out. Plaka in only a few miles walk away.
SHUBHRA’S OVERVIEW? : I personally really fell in love with this island…it was small, intimate and provided a sense of calm and tranquillity with a real sense of opulence within the hotel properties. I liked the fact that luxury really can mix with authenticity. For those looking for complete escape, this really does offer it. (This is ‘My Shirley Valentine’ moment). It feels lovely to be pampered and spoilt within such beautiful surroundings and comfort. However it is an amazing island with an abundance of history and passion from its people. Just watching the sun start to set, seeing the local fishermen wrap up their rods with their daily catch and the crystal clear waters slightly waving in the water – this island truly provides the peace you’re looking for.
